Today I wanted to talk to you a little bit about types of gold! The most common question we receive is “can I wear this piece of jewelry in the water?” or “will this tarnish if I wear it every day?” The answer completely depends on what the piece is made out of, so I thought I would share some gold education with you all in order to help maintain the beauty of all of your pieces.
Gold plated Jewelry:
Gold plated jewelry has a thin layer of solid gold that is applied to a base of brass which is estimated to be 0.05% or less of the metal product. Gold plating is strong a durable, however it will generally wear off more quickly because of this we recommend always taking gold plated items off to swim, shower, and even be careful around perfume with these gorgeous pieces. Gold plated jewelry tends to be more affordable due to containing smaller amounts of gold, but it is still a gorgeous option if you’re on a budget, just make sure to take proper precaution in order to make it last!
Vermeil Jewelry:
Vermeil jewelry is made of sterling silver which has been gilded (similar to plating) with gold. Vermeil jewelry is higher quality than gold plated jewelry because the layer of gold is slightly thicker, and the base is sterling silver as opposed to brass. Although it has a thicker layer, in order to keep the gold color of your vermeil jewelry it is still essential to take off when you’re in water, because it can tarnish
Gold-filled Jewelry:
Gold-filled jewelry is jewelry composed of a solid layer of gold. Most high-quality gold-filled pieces have the same appearance as high carat gold. The core metal is brass and gold-filled is legally required to contain 5% or 1/20 gold by weight, to get specific. Most jewelry that is gold-filled made this way can last 10 to 30 years though the layer of gold will eventually wear off. Gold-filled jewelry is pricier than gold plated or vermeil jewelry, however it can be worn in the shower as well as most conditions and you don’t have to worry about it tarnishing, at least not for a long time!
Solid gold Jewelry:
Solid gold jewelry’s price comes from its value in the amount of solid gold you are getting in these pieces. Often gold is made into an alloy by mixing it with other metals in order to create a stronger metal than pure gold. Solid gold jewelry is the highest in price and purity.
